Depth Is a Cheat Code. Breadth Is a Tax.

Last week we named the trap: trying to learn everything. This week, the fix; and it starts by exposing the most convincing lie in studying.

The familiarity trap

Read a page enough times and it starts to feel known. That warm "yeah, I've got this" is familiarity, not mastery. Your brain is recognising the shape of the words, not retrieving the idea. The exam never asks you to recognise;it asks you to produce, from a blank page, under time.

So the test you practise should look like the test you sit.

Two things that actually work

  • Active recall. Close the notes and pull the answer out of your own head. Every retrieval physically strengthens the memory. Struggling to remember isn't failure; it's the rep doing its job.
  • Spaced repetition. Review a fact just as you're about to forget it, and the memory holds for longer each time. Cram it ten times tonight and it fades by Monday; meet it five times across two weeks and it stays.

Notice what both demand: fewer things, revisited properly. You cannot space and recall forty topics a night. You can with the handful that matter.

The quiet math of focus

The first hour on a topic buys you the most. The fifth re-read of the same page buys you almost nothing. Breadth spends all your hours on first-passes that never deepen. Depth reinvests those hours where they compound; and compounding is the whole game.

Ten shallow reviews teach you a topic once. Five spaced retrievals teach you it for good.

Try it this week

Pick one topic you "sort of" know. Turn its key ideas into questions. Answer them from memory, check, and schedule the ones you missed to come back in a few days. That's the entire loop — and it's exactly what a good flashcard deck automates for you.

Next week: how to choose which topics deserve that depth.
