Past papers are a map, not a mystery

Every course has a distinct rhythm, and it's written across its past papers. The same core themes pop up year after year, just wearing slightly different clothes. Work through three or four papers and the patterns quickly become clear.

• Frequency — which topics show up almost every year?
• Weight — where are the biggest marks hiding?
• Command words — are you asked to "define" or "evaluate"? The verb dictates the depth you need.
• Pairings — which topics constantly get paired together?

Build a high-yield shortlist

Divide your syllabus into three clear buckets: Vital (frequent + heavy marks), Useful (occasional + medium marks), and Rare (rarely shows up). This gives you a plan that matches effort to reward, keeping you from spreading yourself too thin.

Give the Vital topics the full treatment — active recall, spaced repetition, and real exam practice. Give the Useful ones a steady pass. Let the Rare ones go, and don't feel guilty about it.

The hardest skill: saying "not now"

Dropping a topic can feel risky, but it isn't. Every "yes" to a rare topic is a quiet "no" to something that will be on the paper. Prioritising isn't cutting corners — it's protecting your time for what actually moves the needle.
